Psuedogout is not traditional ‘gout’, although symptoms may be the same. Pseudogout is caused by the build up of calcium in the body, traditional gout is caused by the build up of uric acid. Simply put:
- Pseudogout: a symptom-set brought on by excessive calcium in the body.
- Gout: inflammation, swelling and pain caused by excessive blood uric-acid levels.
Note: each disorder is usually treated differently with different drugs. Although anti inflammatories can be used for both

Hello, this is an interesting gout blog. Only drugs help relive me from an attack. Ironically, this week has been my worst! Reading bits and pieces from websites about gout has helped relive my symptoms. Treatment with conventional drugs helped relieve many of my symptoms after being initially identified with pseudogout. Enjoyed reading and learning about gout. You’ve put some effort in to this: graphics and nice pics and very useful info! A. J. Banks
